Quick Fix Friday: Your Medical Blog Title Is Too Vague

Most people visiting your medical or dental website are hungry for usable, easily digestible information tailored to their specific concerns, such as understanding symptoms or treatment options. Some are even stressed after receiving a scary diagnosis or being told they need a complicated procedure. Your healthcare blog might include a post that addresses your patients’ pain points.

However, if your medical practice blog has a vague or “meh” title, your readers may never find it in a Google search. If they do, they likely won’t stick around long enough to read it.

Let’s look at the problem of vague blog titles:

The Problem

Vague medical blog titles rarely perform well in search results or entice patients to click. For example, here’s one most readers are likely to skip:

Type 2 Diabetes: A Diagnosis Worth Noting

First, a diabetes diagnosis is significant and life-changing, but what exactly is “worth noting” about it? This title doesn’t clearly explain why the reader should care.

Also, what specific benefit does reading the post offer, and what could the audience miss by not doing so? A strong blog title will tell you what you’ll learn or what problem you’ll solve if you stick around and read the post.

Another issue is that the title is weak for search engine optimization (SEO). Most people won’t search for “what’s notable about type 2 diabetes?” Instead, they’re more likely to Google “what is type 2 diabetes?” “symptoms of type 2 diabetes,” or “how serious is type 2 diabetes?”

The Quick Fix

To improve the title, use language that reflects common patient questions and concerns as they seek answers or reassurance. Let’s revise this to tighten the focus, add more detail, and improve clarity. For instance, here’s an example of a blog title for a medical practice:

Your First Steps After a Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis

This title will likely perform better because it’s more patient-centered. It addresses the sense of urgency some patients may feel: “What do I do now? What does this diagnosis mean for the rest of my life?”

Furthermore, this title gives readers a clearer expectation of what they’ll learn from the blog: the first steps to take after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. That clear promise makes the article more appealing and useful.

For search engine optimization (SEO), the revised title is stronger because it includes the primary keyword phrase, "type 2 diabetes diagnosis.” This keyword aligns with common Google searches such as "what to do after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis" or "newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes."

Why It Matters

What makes patients click on medical blog posts? Think of a well-written blog title as an email subject line. It should be descriptive and not leave the reader guessing what’s in the post (or email). It can even give the reader a compelling reason to stay on your blog.

Whether it’s for my own blog or my clients, I spend a lot of time crafting each healthcare blog title or headline to be eye-catching, clear, and informative. The same applies to subheadings within the blog post. If you need help writing medical blog titles for patient education, I can help.
